Road Trip

Hi friends!
I had a fun weekend with my mom, and although we had a few tense moments, I enjoyed it a lot!

On Friday she had her company's Christmas dinner and I didn't see her the whole day. She says she didn't come home at lunch time because when she did on Thursday I didn't want to stay and she had to take me to work with her after lunch.

But on Friday she had to go from work straight to the restaurant, so she didn't come see me just in case I wanted to go with her. Daddy did come early afternoon and took care of me.

Mom had to do some shopping on Saturday but I didn't allow her to leave the apartment without me. I am acting like a little baby, and she is confused because I don't suffer from separation anxiety regularly. But that was not our main problem.

My aunt, uncle and cousins are coming from Canada to meet me and spend Christmas with me. They will leave the 30th to visit Disney, but mom has to work until the 31st. So she decided to spend New Year's eve here with daddy and a friend of hers that's coming from Washington State, and then she will drive to Orlando to meet the family and go with them to Saint Augustine. She wants to take me for my first road trip, but we are not sure if daddy will be able to come too.

On saturday she decided to drive with me to South Beach to give it a try, because lately she has noticed that I am not behaving while she drives. My problem is that I don't like to be tied, she has tried with a crate and a special harness before. I get nervous unless I am free, and when I get too stressed out my addison's disease shows up. Mom has showed me that my space in the car is under the passenger's seat (where the feet goes) because she does not like to see me roaming around or on the seats (she is scared of the air bag).

But I can't stay there for long! Specially on a day like Saturday, when I felt sooooo attached to my mom I had to be on her lap while she was driving. (NOTE: I don't like her lap when she is not driving. She is frustrated). I have a chewing bone to entertain myself in the car but it only works for a few minutes. Of course, we couldn't make it to our destination, but not only because of me, but also because she was falling asleep!!! That is THE other problem of us going by ourselves.

So now mom is trying to see if daddy can fit his work schedule to go with us on our road trip, for our own safety. On Saturday we ended up in Key Biscayne which was totally fine with me because I love the beach!
Anyway, mom wanted some advice because she thinks it is important for me to stay calm while she drives.

She hopes to find many places to visit while we are in Saint Augustine that are pet friendly. If not, she is willing to stay outside with me, while the rest of the family visit places. She has been there twice already!

Thank you!

If I am in the car with mom, PlusOne and Lucky, I am just fine. If there are others in the back seat, then I want to be with mom. I am sorry we can't offer you any advice.

Oh wow...I wish we could help, but after buying all kinds of car harnesses and having the best of intentions...I caved and now Salinger sits RIGHT on my lap while I'm driving (or a passenger). Probably not the smartest thing, but I figured this was a safe place to share my dirty little Pug secret! HAHAHAA

Coco just melts my heart every time I look at his picture! I hope your road trip goes well and everyone arrives safely with with some degree of sanity!

Happy holidays!

Hi Sandra and Coco!
We hope that Coco's dad can go on the trip with you to ease a little stress - sounds like that would be the best.
Clover sits in the back seat when we take her somewhere - she has a little seatbelt clip that attaches to her harness. We put some blankets under her and around her to make her more comfy, and she didn't like it at first (she had a little car seat before that), but now she is used to it and she likes it...
Hope you can figure something out to keep you both safe and stress free!

Hi Sandra! Pearl has a harness that latches to the seatbelt in the passenger seat. She hates it for the first 5 or 10 minutes, but then she's okay. I try to keep a hand on her and always bring one of her rawhide chews, which distracts her.

Good luck to you and Coco!

Oh no!

We have to seatbelt Gus since he dive bombs me when I am driving. But unfortunately he has started to throw hissy fits after we only go a few blocks.
Indy roams because she will sit down and stay there but she is getting pretty bad so she needs a seatbelt too.
Hope your husband is able to help out!
